Nebraska Hall of Fame: John J. Pershing

Military Commander & Professor

During his lifetime, John J. Pershing (1860 - 1948) was the only American to be promoted to the rank of General of the Armies, the highest rank possible in the United States Army. The most famous aspect of his military career was his time as the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces on the Western Front in World War I from 1917-1918.

Pershing was also the Professor of Military Science and Tactics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 1891 to 1895, where he created the Pershing Rifles.

He was inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Fame in 1963-64.
