Mari Sandoz (1896 - 1966) was born in Sheridan County, Nebraska as Mary Susette Sandoz.
She enrolled at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1922 where she began pursuing her interest in writing.
In the following years she worked in the English Department as a proofreader, at the Nebraska State Historical Society as a researcher and proofreader, and was an associate editor of the School Executive Magazine.
She officially began her writing career in 1928 publishing works under the name of Mari Sandoz.
Sandoz was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1975-76.
