BACKGROUND NOTE
William Julius Harmon was with the survey party which covered the region now comprising Hayes and Chase counties of Nebraska. This party was under the direction of W.A. Richards, who was later the governor of Wyoming.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one reel of negative microfilm approximately 10 feet long, containing the diary of William Julius Harmon. A typescript copy of the diary is also available. The greater part of this diary relates to a surveying expedition in the southwestern part of the state in 1872. It specifically mentions what the prairie looked like, animal life, and precautions against attacks. Entries before the end of March relate to every-day life around home, while later entries were made after the party had set out.
