New Look, New Conservation Guide

The History Nebraska Conservation Division has a new name, new look, and new ways to help you preserve your own collections.

As you may have noticed, what was once the Nebraska State Historical Society has been rebranded as History Nebraska!  New name, same great organization!  You can read the letter from our director, Trevor Jones about our new name here.  With the new name change, the Ford Center has updated the Collections Care .pdfs on our Resources page.  If you haven’t been there before, you’ll find guides to help you care for your collections at home such as “Matting and Framing”, “Caring for Books” and “Caring for Glass and Ceramics.”  Each of these guides have been updated with our new logo and branding, but the information is the same as it was before.  They include the importance of proper handling and care, as well as information on when to contact a conservator and where to buy supplies for cleaning and storage.

In addition to the updated guides, we have added a new manual aimed at museums on “Housing Native American Artifacts.”  This guide gives step-by-step instructions on creating stacking storage trays, housing for arrows, supports for moccasins, and cradleboard cover mounts, just to name a few.  While this guide was created with museums and other collecting institutions in mind, the suggestions can be used by anyone with similar collections.  We hope to add more Collections Care guides for museums and institutions and welcome any suggestions for the care guides you would like to see on our website.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
