Three Nebraska students were recognized at the state contest of National History Day, a research and project-based program for students in grades 6-12. This year’s theme was “Breaking Barriers in History”.

Rhett Flack (right picture) and Colton Mader (left picture) of Crawford High School won the junior division Nebraska History special award with their group documentary, “The Buffalo Soldiers Led the Way”. Their sponsoring teachers were Nathan Kackmeister and Moni Hourt.

Tyler Kaus of Chadron High School won the senior division Nebraska History special award with his individual documentary, “Whirlwind: Blowing Down Barriers for Modern Computers”. His sponsoring teachers were Michael Sandstrom and Cathy Kaus.

History Nebraska board member, Lance Bristol, and Collections Registrar, Jordan Miller, reviewed this year’s Nebraska-related topics to find the best use of archival material to tell a Nebraska story in the junior division and in the senior division.

To celebrate these accomplishments the students received award checks and the teachers received a one-year membership to History Nebraska.

Congratulations to Rhett, Colton and Tyler for their great use of the archives and to the teachers for their guidance and support.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
