Throwback Thursday Photo, Decoration Day
In today’s Throwback Thursday photo, the residents of Comstock, Nebraska celebrates Decoration Day in about 1910. Decoration Day began shortly after the Civil War as a way to honor those who died in service to the United States. As seen in this photograph, communities often paraded through town to their cemeteries where the graves of veterans would be decorated. Decoration Day eventually became Memorial Day which became a federal holiday in 1971.
