Throwback Thursday Photograph, Omaha 1868

Today’s Throwback Thursday photo takes way, way back to August 1868 to the northwest corner of 13th and Douglas Street in Omaha, Nebraska. Several employees of the Omaha Daily Herald pose in the second-floor windows of the newspaper’s offices. The Omaha Daily Herald began publication in October 1865. In 1889, it was absorbed by the Omaha Daily World to form the Omaha Daily World-Herald.

Here are a few fun details revealed when the image was scanned in the NSHS Digital Imaging Lab:

The stripped barber’s pole on the corner is squared and not round.

Are you curious what the corner of 13th and Douglas looks like today?

Check out the Google Street view.

There appears to be a wooden speaker’s platform built outside the Republican Headquarters.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
