BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
John Gillespie was born in Springfield, Ohio in 1832 and moved to Peru, Nebraska in 1859. He fought through the Civil War and later in the Indian Skirmishes. He was elected territorial auditor and later state auditor and was on the commission which located the state capitol in Lincoln. In 1871 articles of impeachment were filed against him and Governor David Butler. Mr. Gillespie died in Lincoln in 1897. The Gillespie collection related for the most part to the impeachment proceedings against him and Governor Butler
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection relates mostly to the impeachment proceedings against Gillespie and Governor Butler. The collection consists of a scrapbook of news clippings, most which relates to the impeachment, and a folder containing the articles of impeachment against John Gillespie, a typed copy of his defense, and a souvenir of the Spanish-American War signed by President William McKinley.
