BACKGROUND NOTE

Born in England on November 15, 1858, Felix Hales came to the United States with his family in 1883. The family settled at Tilden, Nebraska, where he taught school. Later, Hales worked in the hardware business with his uncle, Ed Kite. When the hardware store closed, Hales purchased the local newspaper, The Tilden Citizen. Hales served as editor of the newspaper until his death. While in Tilden, Hales had also served as county supervisor, a member of the board of education and a member of the village trustees. Felix Hales died on April 24, 1917. He was survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Thornton) Hales and their five children.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of one box containing approximately 55 letters written by Felix Hales to various members of his family. The letters date from 1909-1916. Topics discussed include local and family news, as well as observations about World War I.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
