BACKGROUND NOTE

The Falls City Canning Company was a short-lived business enterprise established in 1886, with E.D. Heyde as trustee, and T.S. Waltemeyer as manager. The facility had a capacity of 40,000 cans per day, and packed the J. Waltemeyer & Son Medical brand of canned goods. In the Nebraska State Gazetteer and Business Directory for 1888-1889, the factory was touted as a “major industry, giving employment to a large number of people.” However, by 1890, the Falls City Canning Company had ceased operations.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection of business records of the Falls City Canning Company consists of three volumes of account books dating from 1886-1889. The volumes contain records of daily receipts and expenditures during the short term existence of the company. About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
