HISTORICAL NOTE
The First Baptist Church of Lincoln, Nebraska, was organized in 1869 at the home of L.W. Billingsley. In 1871 the first church building was erected at 11th and L Streets and a Sunday School was organized. A growing membership required larger facilities and so in 1888 a new building was erected on the site of the present church at 14th and K Streets. In 1890 the East Lincoln church was organized by members formerly of this congregation.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of the records of the First Baptist Church of Lincoln, Nebraska, dating from 1880-1997. The materials are arranged in three Series: 1) Record Books, 1884-1953; 2) Women’s Organizations, 1880-1934; and 3) General Records.
The record books in Series 1 are generally a chronological account of church events and data, including minutes of meetings, reports, correspondence, and the additions or deletions of members. One volume contains an alphabetical list of members for the years approximately 1892-1908 which was copied from other volumes. Series 2, Minutes of Women’s Organizations, includes minutes, constitutions and other records of women’s groups in the church. The General Records in Series 3, 1944-1997 [reels 3 and 4], were filmed later than the rest of the collection, and were not filmed by History Nebraska (HN).
The original records are not in the HN collections; only the microfilm copies are available. Reels 3 and 4 were not filmed by HN. They may be Inter-library loaned, but copies must be purchased from the church.
Note: One folder of original items removed from the library collection is included.
