BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Born in Pennsylvania on December 25, 1844, Isaiah David Evans moved with his family to Wisconsin when he was four years old. He served with E Company, 49th Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War. In 1866 he traveled to Virginia City, Montana, to mine for gold. Evans settled in Nebraska in1871, first working as a farm hand, and then teaching at a rural school. He took a homestead in 1878 and married Emma Williams, daughter of an early president of Peru Teachers College. They would have four children. For a time Evans served as postmaster at Lowell, Nebraska, and then as Commissioner at the Internal Revenue Office in Omaha. In 1900 he served as supervisor of the census for the 5th Nebraska District.
Evans served in the Nebraska State Legislature as a Representative from Kenesaw from 1899-1901 and again from 1911-1913. He was a member of the Kenesaw School Board for fifteen years, and at various times served as editor of several newspapers, including the Lowell Register, the Sutton Register and the Hastings Nebraskan. Evans was a member of the State Constitutional Convention in 1919-1920. He also worked as a records clerk in the Governor’s Office under Governor McMullen and Governor Weaver. Isaiah David Evans died on January 10, 1935 and is buried at Kenesaw, Nebraska.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of one box of political papers relating to Isaiah David Evans. Materials date from the 1920s to 1935 and include correspondence, speeches and articles, newspaper clippings and biographical materials. All the articles and speeches appear to have been written by Evans, but some of them were probably written for Governors McMullen and Weaver.
