BACKGROUND NOTE

The Advertising-Selling League of Omaha was established in 1920 as a means for businessmen who bought or sold advertising to gather, make connections and discuss various business opportunities. As membership grew, the League started to bring in new speakers each week. At first, the speakers were mainly leaders in business and industry. The popularity of the League increased, and the speakers series expanded to include authors, artists, politicians, and professional athletes. By 1927, with a membership of over 1,400, the Advertising-Selling League of Omaha was the largest business club in the United States. Speakers series programs in the collection show that some of the noted speakers that came to Omaha included William Jennings Bryan, coaching legend Knute Rockne, Prince William of Sweden, and noted adventurer Richard Halliburton.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
