BACKGROUND NOTE

Ben B. Wood was born in Cayuta, Schuyler County, New York in 1843.  After working in the banking business in Havana, New York, he came to Omaha in 1868, and took a position as bookkeeper in the banking house of J.A. Ware & Co.  In 1872, the Ware Bank became the State bank, with former Governor Saunders as its president and Wood as cashier.  Wood retained that position when the bank was brought into the national banking system as the Merchants National Bank in 1882.  In 1892 Wood became the vice-president, and continued to hold that position until his death on June 19, 1904.
