BACKGROUND NOTE

Born in South Dakota on May 27, 1898, Bessie May Tucker moved to Dixon County, Nebraska, with her family by 1900.  She married Robert Gilmer around 1923, and the couple lived in Ponca, Nebraska.  Robert died in 1982.  Bessie Gilmer died on May 4, 1992.  The couple is buried in the Ponca Cemetery at Ponca, Nebraska.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of reminiscences of Bessie May (Tucker) Gilmer of Lincoln, Nebraska. These reminiscences trace Gilmer's life as a child, teacher, and wife in northeast Nebraska, the Sandhills, and Lincoln, Nebraska. She writes about her parents, siblings, friends, neighbors, and her husband, Robert Gilmer, as well as their children. She makes observations on various things including education in Nebraska; the Kinkaid Act; how to build a sod house; weather; her boyfriends; influenza; and the Great Depression.
