BACKGROUND NOTE

Born in Indiana in 1857, Byron Sage was the son of Harlehigh and Sophia Sage.  Sometime between 1870 and 1878 the Sage family moved to Sarpy County, Nebraska.  Byron married Mattie Allen at Papillion, Nebraska on April 13, 1892.  Byron and Mattie lived on their farm in Sarpy County through the 1920s. By 1930 they had moved into Papillion, Nebraska.  Byron Sage died in 1937.  Mattie passed away ten years later.   Both are buried in Cedar Dale Cemetery at Papillion, Nebraska. 

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of one item, a diary kept by Byron Sage of Xenia, Sarpy County, Nebraska.  The entries date from January 1, 1878 to August 24, 1879.  The brief daily entries describe husking corn, hauling wood, attending church services, visiting neighbors, changes in weather, etc.

The second half of the diary appears to have been kept by Byron’s wife, Mattie Sage.  Her entries date from January 1, 1917 to February 29, 1932.  The brief daily entries describe domestic life, including washing clothing, baking, gathering eggs, etc.  Entries also discuss the weather, visits from friends and family, and local news.
