BACKGROUND NOTE



Born at Cavendish, Vermont, in 1861, Carl A. Bemis came to Nebraska with his parents in 1877.  He married Phoebe Schaaf at David City, Nebraska, on January 12, 1905.  Bemis was a well-respected member of the Seward community, working as an engineer, attorney and abstractor.  He served as the Seward County surveyor from 1903 to 1910 and again from 1918 to 1923.  Bemis also served on the county board of supervisors from 1923 to 1926.  Carl A. Bemis died at Seward, Nebraska, on March 26, 1938.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of one folder containing photocopies of nine letters written by Carl A. Bemis at Seward, Nebraska.  The letters date from 1929 to 1936, and touch on various topics including family and friends, Nebraska politics, the Great Depression and Dust Bowl, and current events.  Bemis also mentions the Lindbergh kidnapping.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
