BACKGROUND NOTE

Born in Illinois in 1852, Charles E. Hill married Ruth Gaddis at Whiteside, Illinois, on October 23, 1875.  The Hills came to Nebraska in 1878, settling in Adams County.  The couple had at least eight children, including Alma, Ada, Clarence, Myrtle, Gertrude, Grover, Clayton and Harry.  Charles Hill died on March 1, 1930.  Ruth Hill died in September of 1938.  Both are buried in Parkview Cemetery at Hastings, Nebraska.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consist of one reel of microfilm containing two diaries of Charles E. Hill. The first diary records the journey of the Hill family from Illinois to Adams County, Nebraska, in 1878. The second diary describes daily life and events on the Hill farm dating from 1888-1889.These two diaries were loaned for filming in October, 1955. The original diaries are not in the collections.
