BACKGROUND NOTE



Founded in 1940, the Daughters of Colonial Wars, Nebraska Chapter existed with, in their own words, “the intent 1) to honor and perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who, by their acts and counsel, assisted in the establishment, defense and preservation of the American Colonies, 2) to collect and preserve records relative to the American Colonial Period, and records of service of men who assisted in the establishment, defense and preservation of the American Colonies, 3) to promote historical research and the study of history to commemorate the events of the American Colonial Period between 1607 and 1775, 4) to inspire patriotism and loyalty to our country, and 5) to foster a spirit of fellowship among members of the Society.” The Nebraska Chapter disbanded in 1992.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection contains the records of the Daughters of Colonial Wars, Nebraska Chapter from its beginning in 1940, to 1992 when it was disbanded. The collection consists mainly of organizational records including minutes of meetings, treasurer’s reports, registrar’s reports, membership applications, etc.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
