BACKGROUND NOTE
Born in Maryland on October 26, 1833, David Henry McLaughlin move to Dayton, Ohio, in 1850, where he worked in the milling business. In 1857 he left Ohio and came to Nebraska, settling at Brownville for a time, working as a land agent. In 1859 he started a milling business in Omaha for C.B. Smith & Co. In 1860 he worked as a Pony Express rider, then in 1861 he returned to Brownville where he engaged in the grocery business with S.L. Swan. Elected as a Councilman in Brownville in 1865, McLaughlin served two terms.
During the 1870s McLaughlin went into engineering, eventually working as a foreman of bridgework for a local construction company. In 1880 he assisted in laying out the town site of Carson, Nebraska. In 1884 McLaughlin was elected Mayor of Brownville. He was re-elected four different times. David H. McLaughlin died January 23, 1912 and is buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Brownville, Nebraska.
