HISTORICAL NOTE



Delta Kappa Gamma is a professional honor society of women educators. The organization promotes professional and personal growth of its members and excellence in education. Founded in 1929 in Austin, Texas, Delta Kappa Gamma spread across the country, opening numerous state and local chapters. The Nebraska chapter (Rho State) was organized on April 25, 1936 at the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln, Nebraska. Rho State president, Ella Blunk, organized Zeta chapter (Lancaster County, Nebraska) on October 30, 1943 at the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln. Some notable members of Zeta chapter have included Annadora Gregory, Esther Lefler, Louise Mears, Olivia Pound, Elsie Rokahr, and Martha Turner.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists mainly of research material compiled by Delta Kappa Gamma, Zeta Chapter under chairwomen Esther McCurdy and Louise W. Mears. The research material relates to the lives of pioneer women teachers in Nebraska. Biographical information concerning teachers such as Susan R. Frazier and Olga F. Stastny forms the bulk of the collection. Also included in the collection are committee reports and correspondence relating to the pioneer women teachers project, as well as miscellaneous Delta Kappa Gamma directories and publications from the local, state and national chapters.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
