BACKGROUND NOTE



Dominick Gerald Courtenay was a prominent attorney in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Some sources show his last name as Courtney.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The manuscript portion of this collection consists of six blueprints of a home built by Mr. and Mrs. Dominick Courtenay, ca.1878, at 1811 L Street, Lincoln, Nebraska. Also included is a Courtenay family history by Irene Courtenay.



The photo component of this collection consist of 142 photographic prints and glass negatives. Most of the images document daily activities and events, as well as costume and dress of the period, ca. late 1890s-early 1900s. Images include animals in a circus; parades; views of Lincoln, Nebraska; a flood in Lincoln; and glass negatives showing funeral flowers and a casket, 1908.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
