Ernst Herminghaus was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1890. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a horticulture degree in 1913. He graduated from the Harvard Graduate School of Design’s landscape architecture program in 1915. Herminghaus returned to Nebraska and became the first practicing landscape architect in the state. His career spanned fifty years and included projects for the Nebraska State Capitol, Lincoln’s Pioneers Park, and various other private gardens. Ernst Herminghaus died in Connecticut in 1965.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one box of research materials on the life and career of Ernst Herminghaus. The materials were compiled by Richard Sutton for the article, “Ernst H. Herminghaus, Landscape Architect,” Nebraska History, vol. 66, no. 4, 1985, pp. 372-391. The collection includes correspondence, newspaper and magazine articles, notes, illustrations and biographical information. Most of the materials consist of photocopies, and the collection is unprocessed.
