BACKGROUND NOTE

The First Christian Church of York, Nebraska, traces its origins to early religious meetings held in Lockridge Pct., beginning in 1876. However, it was not until 1883 that the Church was legally registered, and the first building was constructed the following year. In 1898, the building was moved to its present location at 8th and Platte Streets in York, and extensive remodeling was undertaken. Dedication ceremonies for the newly remodeled structure were held in October of 1901. Physical improvements to the church facilities continued throughout the years. Preliminary plans for a new educational building were initiated in 1952, and ground for the structure was broken on May 5 of that year. The building was completed and dedicated in March of 1958.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
