BACKGROUND NOTE

In 1872 A.B. Fox opened the second general merchandising store in Louisville, Nebraska. The name was changed to the Fox and Glover’s Store when John V. Glover became a partner in the firm. In 1878 a fire damaged most of the contents in the store, and a new building was constructed on the old site. In 1881 Fox sold his share of the business to Glover, who continued the operation until he sold his stock to Frank Stander. In 1883 Glover opened another store in Louisville. He continued to operate this store until 1890 when he sold his business.

Among the other activities of these two men was the establishment of the first newspaper in Louisville. Fox and Glover were also on the Board of Directors of the Louisville Stoneware Manufacturing Company where Glover was secretary and Fox was treasurer.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
