BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Frederick Pike, son of William and Ann Pike, was born on April 6, 1858, in Glamorganshire, Wales. The Pike family came to America around 1863, settling in Ottawa, Illinois, where Frederick reached adulthood. In 1882 Frederick Pike was married to Maria Martin at Gurnee, Illinois. Soon after, they settled in Newman Grove, Madison County, Nebraska. They had one son, Frederick William Pike, before Maria died in 1884. Upon arriving in Newman Grove, Pike began farming. He remained a farmer for the rest of his life, although material in this collection indicates that he was a partner in a dry goods business with J.T. Hoffman for a while. Pike remarried in 1885. This marriage to Lillian E. Hoffman, produced three daughters. Lillian died in 1912 and Pike married again in 1922. He married Ella A. Black at Ottawa, Illinois. She died on November 28, 1931. Pike died six weeks later on January 8, 1932.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one box of manuscript material arranged in three series: 1) Frederick Pike Estate Material, 1931-1945; 2) Deeds and Mortgages, ca. 1884 – ca. 1901; and 3) Miscellany. This material relates primarily to land owned and money held by Frederick Pike.
The Frederick Pike Estate Material of Series 1 includes Pike’s will, 1931; receipts for distribution of shares left to his beneficiaries, ca. 1931; receipts for distribution of shares left to his beneficiaries, ca. 1931-1945; and an inventory of Pike’s possessions. The Deeds and Mortgages of Series 2 includes abstracter’s certificates, warranty deeds, mortgage releases, and mortgage agreements, ca. 1884 – ca. 1901. Series 3 contains Miscellaneous items including a small amount of correspondence written to Frederick Pike, 1888-1932; material dealing with the pension of William T. Black, first husband of Ella A. Black Pike, and other miscellaneous loose papers.
