BACKGROUND NOTE

George O. Smith, Jr., son of George O. and Margaret (Sebring) Smith was born in Bloomington, Illinois, in 1872.  In 1885 the family moved to Omaha and later settled in Lincoln, where George attended Lincoln High School.  He married Cora Frances Smith in Lincoln in 1905.  Smith served as a bookkeeper at First National Bank before becoming one of the original incorporators of Miller & Paine Department Store and served as its secretary-treasurer until his retirement in the 1950s.  He was the first president of the Lincoln Retail Credit Association and was a life member of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce.  George O. Smith died in Lincoln on October 27, 1957.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one folder containing items relating to George O. Smith's career and interests.  Included is Smith’s account book, 1910; his song recital program, Apr. 18, 1917; a 1935 speech Smith gave to the Lincoln Retail Credit Association; a historical timeline of Miller and Paine; a letter from 1942 documenting Smith’s road trip in 1910 from Lincoln to Lake Okoboji, Iowa; letters to Mrs. George Smith (George Jr.’s mother and wife); biographical information about George’s wife, Cora; a program of songs; Nebraska Art Association material; and a World War I poem, "Our Flag in France," written by University of Nebraska graduate Will Reed Dunroy.
