George P. Comer was born in Tennessee and appointed clerk of the Pine Ridge Indian Agency of South Dakota from Nebraska as early as 1891. He was clerk of the agency, 1893-1895. During that time he was the subject of accusations and an investigation regarding contracting for lumber and construction supplies.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one folder of papers arranged in two series: 1) Correspondence, 1893-1895, n.d.; and 2) Miscellaneous. These papers relate to accusations and an investigation of irregularities in the letting and fulfilling of contracts for lumber and construction supplies for the agency during the years 1893-1895. Principals involved were: Capt. George LeRoy Brown, acting agent, 1894; Capt. Charles G. Penny, Acting agent, 1895; Harry F. Cady and James S. White representing the H.F. Cady Lumber Company of Omaha, Nebraska; and George P. Comer as clerk of the agency. The correspondence of Series 1 includes official business and informal notes, and envelopes. The miscellany of Series 2 includes a deposition (1895) and several notes with figures (undated).
