BACKGROUND NOTE

Born at Battle Creek, Michigan, on May 22, 1847, George Warren Joy moved to a farm in Berry County, Michigan, with his parents when he was three.  Joy enlisted in the Army in February of 1865, and served one year.  He returned to Berry County to live with his parents until the family moved to Nebraska in 1872.  Joy taught school for a time in both Michigan and Nebraska, as well as working on the farm.  The family lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, for several months before settling in Nuckolls County, Nebraska.  Joy married Elizabeth Templin on March 12, 1876.  The couple had seven children.  George Warren Joy died at his home in Oak, Nebraska, on August 28, 1929.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of one folder containing transcripts of George Warren Joy’s diaries dating from 1871, 1872, 1874 and 1875.  Russ Czaplewski transcribed the diaries in 2000.  The diaries describe teaching in Michigan and Nebraska, as well as pioneer life.  Joy includes entries about farm life and the weather, as well as local news.  Also included in the collection is a photocopy of several newspaper clippings about George and Elizabeth Joy.
