BACKGROUND NOTE

Aware that the early history of Sioux County, Nebraska, was slipping away with the passing of old-timers, the Harrison Ladies Community Club began in March 1965 to gather material. Depending upon the written assistance of pioneers and their descendants, they compiled more than 300 family histories. These stories and other articles about Harrison, Sioux County and the settling of the county were edited by Ruth Van Ackeren for publication in observance of the Nebraska State Centennial, 1967.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box of manuscript material arranged in two series: 1) Sioux County and Harrison, Sioux County, Nebraska; and 2) Anecdotes and Reminiscences. This collection relates to the history of Sioux County, Nebraska, as recalled and written by early settlers of the area and their descendants.

Series 1 deals generally with Sioux County and Harrison, Sioux County, Nebraska history. Topics written about include organization of Sioux County, lists of old-timers, early life in the county, the founding of several communities and churches in Sioux County and historical events of importance in the area. Series 2 consists of Anecdotes and Reminiscences about early Sioux County, Nebraska residents. This material is arranged alphabetically by the name of the person the story is about.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
