BACKGROUND NOTE

Born in England in 1877, Harry S. Thorpe joined the merchant marines and served aboard the merchant ship, Lancaster Castle.  He eventually came to the United States and settled in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Harry S. Thorpe died in 1963 and is buried in Lincoln Memorial Park.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of one folder containing a typescript speech entitled, “A Tale of the Sea: A Story of the Old Windjammer Days” by Harry S. Thorpe.  The speech documents Thorpe’s experiences aboard the merchant ship, Lancaster Castle.  Also included is a postcard sketch of the ship and a certificate appointing Thorpe as chairman of the Four Minute Men of Norfolk, Nebraska, in 1919.
