BACKGROUND NOTE

Harvey Sylvester Souder was born in Salem, Indian, son of Joab and Ellen Turner Souder.  His early education consisted of Bible instruction from his father.  In 1875, after the death of his mother, Souder and his family moved to Herman, Nebraska.  He received his first formal education at Herman, and preached to those who would hear him in that town.  On March 25, 1890, Souder married Cora Mundorf.  To this union were born eight children, six sons and two daughters.

In 1894, Souder moved to Harvard, Nebraska, where he worked as a farmer and carpenter.  He also studied for four years a correspondence course in Bible instruction from the Johnson Bible College in Kimberlin Heights, Tennessee, a college of the Brotherhood of the Disciples of Christ.  Upon completion of his course of study, he became a full time minister at Red Cloud, Nebraska.  He also served as pastor of the congregations at Burchard, Virginia, Blair, Geneva, Table Rock, Douglas, Shubert, and Beatrice.

In 1936, Souder’s wife died.  On December 1939, he married the widowed Grace Mundorf Patrick.  He was forced to resign from his work in the ministry in 1949 because of ill health.  The last years of his life were spent in hospitals in Beatrice and Lincoln, where he died on December 18, 1951.
