BACKGROUND NOTE



Jens H. Jensen was born in Denmark in 1849, and was a son of Thomas and Mern Jensen, who came to the United States in 1871. Jens came to this country in 1870. He first went to Missouri and then came to Nebraska in the fall of 1872, working in Omaha on the railroad. In 1874 he took up a homestead in Kearney County, and with his brother, Jens L., opened the first store south of the sand hills, in what was known as Fredericksborg. He was elected as county clerk in 1881 and re-elected in 1883. He moved to Minden, Nebraska in January of 1882. In 1883 he invested in Minden real estate and laid out the Jensen addition and the Evans addition to the city. He erected a the Jensen Hotel and conducted a large farming implement business. Jens H. Jensen married Miss Mary Beisel, a native of Iowa, in January of 1884. They had three children: Valentine, Thomas and Goldie. He was a member of the Lutheran Church.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This film strip contains two items: 1) Incorporation papers of the J. Jensen and Bro. Store, Fredericksborg, 17 September 1875 (which served also as a Danish community center in Kearney County); and 2) Picture of a store in Denmark where Mr. Jensen served his apprenticeship.



The collection was loaned for filming in December of 1955.
