BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Not much is known regarding John H. Cheever.  He came to Nebraska City from Rhode Island in the spring or summer of 1857.  He speculated in real estate, and in 1858 was a partner in Cheever, Sweet and Company.  He was elected to the Council of the Territory of Nebraska for the counties of Otoe, Cass, Dodge, Platte and Monroe in 1858.  The 1860 census lists John Cheever as 38 years old.  His wife, Elizabeth, was 14 years younger and was born in Indiana.  Nothing is mentioned of John Cheever after June of 1860.  It is assumed he left Nebraska shortly thereafter.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists mostly of business and political correspondence, 1859-1860, primarily relating to John Cheever.  Cheever was a member of the Council of the Territory of Nebraska for the counties of Otoe, Cass, Dodge, Platte and Monroe, and a partner with James Sweet in Cheever, Sweet and Company.  The collection includes copies of legislation and other governmental papers from the period as well as general business correspondence relating to Cheever, Sweet and Company.  Also included are materials relating to the incorporation of the Nebraska City & Denver Express Company (Nebraska City), and the State Bank of Nebraska (Omaha).
