BACKGROUND NOTE
Born at Minatare, Nebraska, on September 24, 1935, Joseph W. Fairfield attended Minatare High School. Fairfield served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Following the war, Fairfield returned to Nebraska and lived at Bridgeport. Joseph W. Fairfield died at Scottsbluff, Nebraska, on February 3, 2007. He is buried in East Lawn Cemetery at Minatare, Nebraska.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one folder of recollections and news stories, 1944-1978, relating to the Scottsbluff and Bridgeport, Nebraska prisoner-of-war camps, 1944-1946. The bulk of the material consists of recollections by former camp employees and area residents, and contemporary newspaper accounts regarding the German and Italian prisoners-of-war interned at the camps. These materials were gathered by Joseph W. Fairfield of Bridgeport, Nebraska.
Note: Several photographs of the Scottsbluff POW camp were transferred to the Photo Room.
