BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Juliaetta Howard, wife of Charles A. Howard, was born in Iowa in 1862. According to the 1900 Nebraska census, the Howards had been married seventeen years and were the parents of five children; one other child had died before reaching maturity. At that time, the family resided on a farm in Blaine Precinct, Nuckolls County. In 1910, the family appeared on the Well Precinct, Lincoln County census. By then, three more children were in the family. The Howards eventually moved to Yakima, Washington. Juliaetta died on November 7, 1953 and was interred in the Tahoma Cemetery at Yakima.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of a diary, ca. 1904. The diary, in typescript form, was kept by Juliaetta Howard during an overland wagon trip from Nuckolls County to Lincoln County, Nebraska. The entries describe the efforts of the Howard family to fight the winter elements during their January trek from Nuckolls County through Deweese, Glenvil, Hastings, Kenesaw, Kearney, Gothenburg, Brady, and Maxwell to their final destination, a farm some twenty miles south of North Platte in Lincoln County.
