BACKGROUND NOTE

The 3rd U.S. Volunteer Infantry was ordered to the Department of the Missouri, arriving at Fort Kearny, Nebraska, April 9, 1865, where it was assigned to duty in the Districts of Nebraska and Colorado. Companies A and B were stationed at Fort Kearney to protect overland mail routes.  The regiment mustered out November 29, 1865.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of a one page, handwritten military document certifying that 1st Lt. L.E. Campbell was fully competent to hold the position as 1st Lieutenant of Infantry and should be retained in service as an officer.  Campbell appeared before the Board of Examiners convened at Fort Kearny, N.T., in 1865.  The text of the document states:

To all whom it may concern:  This is to certify that 1st Lieutenant L.E. Campbell, Co. B, 3rd U.S. Vols. appeared before a Board of Examiners convened at Fort Kearny, N.T.  In pursuance of General Order No. 86, U.S. 1865 Adjutant Generals Office, War Department May 9th 1865 and was duly examined and found to be fully competent to hold the position as 1st Lieutenant of Infantry in the Army and the Board therefore recommended that he be retained in the service as an officer.
