BACKGROUND NOTE



Leander B. Smith, son of Isaac O. and Sarah (Bunnell) Smith, was born near Vosburg, Pennsylvania, on January 27, 1846.  He moved to Fremont, Nebraska in 1867, where he worked for his uncles in a general merchandise business and a drug store.  In 1878 Smith married Cora May Albertson.  That same year he graduated from the Keokuk (Iowa) College of Physicians and Surgeons.  From that time until his retirement in 1915, Smith practiced medicine in and about Fremont. For a number of years he also owned a drug store.  At the end of his career, Dr. Smith estimated that he had delivered over 2100 babies over three generations.  Dr. Leander B. Smith died in Fremont on November 19, 1922.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



This collection consists of one folder containing two volumes of Dr. Leander B. Smith’s medical records, 1878-1912.  The first volume covers births for those years.  The entries show date of birth, parent’s name (usually the father), town, whether the child is black or white, sex, time of birth, whether or not full-term, and notes.  The second volume, 1888-1892, records non-obstetric cases from those years.  Entries include date, patients’ names, age, town of residence, illness, and remarks.   Other items in the collection include clippings and letters from patients delivered by Dr. Smith who are seeking birth information.

It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
