BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Lt. LeRoy C. Ihrie, a Lincoln, Nebraska native, served with the 134th Infantry Division during World War II. While on patrol in Tunisia in March 1943, Ihrie was captured by Italian troops. He spent the next two years as a prisoner of war in Altburgund, Germany interned at Oflag 64. Ihrie was freed from the German camp when Russians liberated the prisoners in February 1945.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of photocopies of two scrapbooks dating from 1943-1945 and 1972. The material relates to the record and experiences of Lt. LeRoy C. Ihrie as a prisoner-of-war in Germany during World War II. Volume 1 contains copies of telegrams documenting Ihrie’s capture and status as a prisoner-of-war, newspaper clippings, government correspondence, and Ihrie’s letters home, 1943-1945. A copy of a photograph, 1972, depicts attendees of a prisoner-of-war reunion. Scrapbook Volume 2 consists of copies of issues of the Oflag 64 Item, a monthly publication of prisoners of war interned in Offizerlager 64, Altburgund, Germany, 1943-1945. The newspaper describes camp events and activities, biographical sketches of individual prisoners, humorous writings, information on deaths which occurred in camp, and directories of inmates and new arrivals.
