BACKGROUND NOTE



Marie Kolena, daughter of Rudolph and Myrtle (Medley) Kolena was born November 13, 1914, in Bolivar, Missouri.  The family moved to the Green Valley area of Holt County, Nebraska, by 1930.  Marie graduated from Atkinson High School in 1934.  She was a rural school teacher in Holt County for nine years before moving to Omaha in 1943, where she became a member of the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.  She had postings in South Carolina and California.  After her discharge, Marie lived in Omaha, working for Cyanamid.  She transferred to the Cyanamid office in Denver, where she worked until her retirement in 1976.  She then moved to Parachute, Colorado, where she died at age 85 on November 3, 2000.

This collection consists of one folder containing letters, certificates, clippings, and ephemera relating to the teaching and military careers of Marie Kolena.

It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
