BACKGROUND NOTE

Born at Ord, Nebraska, on August 25, 1899, Marjorie Barstow was the daughter of William T. and Francis (Foote) Barstow.  She graduated from the University of Nebraska and received an honorary doctorate from Doane College.  Her father started the W.T. Barstow Grain Company where Marjorie worked as a manager and eventually as vice president.  She studied for two years in London with Frederick M. Alexander where she learned the Alexander Technique.  The Alexander Technique is an educational process of retraining habitual patterns of movement and posture in order to improve health and reduce pain and stress.  Barstow returned to Lincoln and continued teaching the Alexander Technique.

She was a member of Alpha Phi sorority and the Nebraska Herbal Society.  Marjorie Barstow died on July 31, 1995.  She is buried in Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Nebraska.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her two siblings, Helen (Barstow) Deputron and Adrian F. Barstow.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box containing mostly business correspondence from Marjorie Barstow’s time working for the W.T. Barstow Grain Company.  The correspondence dates from 1936 to 1963 and relates to business expenses as well as property owned or leased at Bayard, Nebraska.  The bulk of the correspondence is between W.T. Barstow and Thomas Megas and between Marjorie Barstow and George Pappas.  Also included are specifications for a five story office building to be built for S.W. Little by Fiske & Dieman, Architects.  The specifications date from 1907 and the location of the building is listed as on the NW corner of 11th & O Streets in Lincoln, Nebraska.
