SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of one letter dated May 14, 1861, written by Mary Foster Lowman to her brother, Joseph C. Foster, in Knox County, Illinois. Lowman writes the letter from Nebraska Center (Buffalo County) in Nebraska Territory. Lowman apparently stopped at Nebraska Center on a journey farther west. In the letter, Lowman describes what she has seen on her journey, including the Platte Valley and the Wood River terrain. She mentions the town of Wood River Center. She also writes of her family and prices of food. She comments on mining at the Sweet Water gold mine in Wyoming. Also included in the collection are two transcripts of the letter.
