BACKGROUND NOTE

Born in Wyoming County, New York, in 1835, Mary Reddish married George Holbrook in 1854.  George died two years later.  Mary then married James Thomas in 1859.  Between 1860 and 1870 Mary and James moved to Ashland, Nebraska, where James worked as a carriage and wagon builder.  James died in 1923.  Mary Thomas died in 1926.  Both are buried in the Ashland Cemetery at Ashland, Nebraska.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of one folder containing correspondence to and from Mary (Reddish) Thomas.  The bulk of the correspondence is from family and friends, and dates from 1853 to 1892.  Family and local news are the main subjects covered, but there is a letter detailing Mary’s aunt and uncle’s travels to Ashland.  There are also two letters from Mary’s cousin, Wilbur Snyder, from 1862.  Wilbur was serving in Co. K, 17th Regiment, New York infantry.  Also included are the marriage certificates for Mary and George and for Mary and James.
