BACKGROUND NOTE

Born at Nehawka, Nebraska, on March 9, 1861, Mary S. Kirkpatrick was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Craig) Kirkpatrick.  She married George Oliver Harmon, and the couple lived in Weeping Water, Nebraska, for a number of years.  After George’s death in 1926, Mary moved to Avoca, Nebraska.  Mary (Kirkpatrick) Harmon died at Avoca on April 15, 1938.  She and her husband are buried in the Avoca Cemetery.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one volume, a record book, kept by Mary S. Harmon.  Recorded in the volume are minutes of meetings and other records of various organizations, including the Young Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (Avoca, Nebraska); Christian Endeavor (Avoca, Nebraska); Cass County Sunday School Convention (1919); and various lists of children in several local school districts.  Also included are listings of Sunday school attendees, as well as personal listings of farm and household equipment expenses, and various instructions for measuring and sewing.  Entries are scattered throughout the volume and date from 1896-1926.
