BACKGROUND NOTE



Founded in 1922, the Nebraska Congress of Parents and Teachers was the fortieth state branch to organize under the auspices of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers.  The first city council formed within Nebraska was the Lincoln Council, organized on April 4, 1922.  The objectives of the Nebraska Congress of Parents and Teachers were:




    • To promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, church and community.

    • To raise the standards of home life.

    • To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.

    • To bring into closer relation the home and the school that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the training of the child.

    • To develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for every child the highest advantages in physical, mental, social and spiritual education.



The organization is now known as Nebraska PTA.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of records of the Nebraska Congress of Parents and Teachers (NCPT) dating from 1921 to 1973.  Records include minutes of meetings of the state board and state conventions, correspondence and scrapbooks.  Also included are some records relating to the first and fourth districts of the NCPT.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
