BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Nicholas J. Paul was born in Meigs County, Ohio, July 27, 1841, the son of John and Elizabeth (Young) Paul. They were of Scotch and German ancestry. His father was born in 1809 and his mother in New Lisbon, Ohio, in 1817. He received an education at Ewington, Ohio, and for a time taught district school. In the fall of 1862 he moved to Leavenworth, Kansas, and in the following years was engaged in government surveying in southern Nebraska. He was also an employee of the Union Pacific land department. He and his older brother, James N., who was born 23 September 1839, joined to form a colony in the Loup country and filed on a quarter section adjacent to St. Paul, Nebraska.
Nicholas Paul was one of the commissioners appointed to effect the permanent organization of Howard County and at the fall election of 1871 was chosen probate judge. In 1876 he was elected the first representative from the county. In that same year he was married to Lucile Holman on the 19th of February. To them were born one son who died in infancy and one son, John Jay, who died 17 September 1907. His second marriage was to Abby E. Boswell (1893), who gave him a daughter, Pauline (Mrs. Pauline Arterburn). His second wife died 11 October 1895.
In 1879 he was elected County Treasurer, a position he held until 1883. He was also elected school director and served in that position 48 years. In 1884 he purchased the stock of the Howard County Bank, which he later changed to the St. Paul National Bank. The city of St. Paul was named in honor of James and Nicholas Paul. Nicholas Paul died on July 18, 1921.

This collection consists of one reel of microfilm containing the diary of Nicholas Paul. This diary relates the activities of Nicholas Paul for the year 1871. Paul notes weather conditions, items purchased and money spent, and farm work completed.
