BACKGROUND NOTE
In 1874, Edwin A. Fry founded The Niobrara Pioneer, the first newspaper to be published in Niobrara, Knox County, Nebraska. Eleven years later, in June of 1885, another newspaper was begun in Niobrara, published and edited by Frank L. Sullivan. This newspaper, The Niobrara Democrat, had as its motto “Down with Ring Rule!” and it told the democrats of Knox County to “Stand by your guns.”
On March 22, 1895 The Niobrara Democrat became The Niobrara Tribune, with H. Needham as its publisher. It reversed its Democratic Party support and became a republican newspaper.
The material in this collection covers the 1920s, when the paper was edited and published by members of the Stinson family: Allen S. Stinson, Kathryn E. Stinson Ticky and/or Wilbur A. Stinson. During the Stinsons’ ownership, the Tribune again supported the Democratic Party.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one box of manuscript material arranged in four series: 1) Account Books and Journals of The Niobrara Tribune, 1927-1954; 2) Correspondence, 1939-1945; 3) Nebraska Press Association Bulletins, 1945; and 4) Miscellany.
This collection relates primarily to the accounting records of The Niobrara Tribune, a local newspaper in Niobrara, Knox County, Nebraska. Other material collected or used by the Tribune is in this collection, including several Knox County and local records which appeared in the newspaper.
The bulk of this collection consists of the account books and journals, 1927-1954, of Series 1. These books record accounts held by or with The Niobrara Tribune. Entries show a date for each transaction or payment, the name of the individual or company involved, and the amount due or amount credited. A subscription listing is also included in this material.
Series 2 consists of correspondence received by members of the Stinson family, 1939-1945, editors and publishers of The Niobrara Tribune, letters from two World War II veterans, describing their war-time experiences, are included.
The Nebraska Press Association Bulletins, 1945, comprise Series 3.
The miscellany of Series 4 is comprised of an autograph book owned by Kathryn E. Stinson, editor and publisher of the Tribune, tax records of Stinson family members, Niobrara directories, and the By-Laws of the Farmers Union Cooperative Association.
