BACKGROUND NOTE

Noah Smith Clark, son of Joseph and Rhoda Huntington Swan Clark was born in Connecticut in 1848. The 1900 census of Stromsburg, Polk County, Nebraska, lists him as a railroad engineer living with his wife, Minnie Hawes Clark, born in Massachusetts in 1857, and their children, Roy and Bessie, both born in Nebraska.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one box of manuscript material arranged in three series: 1) Correspondence, 1902-1927; 2) Genealogy Material, and 3) Pamphlets and Membership Cards. This material relates primarily to the genealogy and history of the Clark(e) and Hawes families. This material was gathered to enable Noah Clark and his wife to join the Sons or Daughters of the American Revolution (S.A.R. and D.A.R.).

The Correspondence, 1902-1927, of Series 1 consists of letters received by either Noah S. or Minnie Hawes Clark. They contain genealogy information from relatives, as well as family legends, history and reminiscences. Series 2 consists of Genealogical Material for both the Clark(e) and Hawes families. This includes family trees, pedigree forms, and applications for membership in the Sons or Daughters of the American Revolution. The Pamphlets and Membership Cards of Series 3 relate to Clark’s membership in various organizations. Record of his employment with the Union Pacific is also included.
