SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of material relating to the Omaha Indians, located mostly in Bancroft and Macy, Nebraska. Many of the materials relate to the language, culture, and daily life of the Omaha Indians. The manuscript portion of this collection consists of a journal dating from the 1860s and 1870s. The journal is titled "Vocabulary of Omaha Indians." Also included in this collection is a list of people who signed an Omaha treaty in 1830.
The photo component of this collection consists of 124 photographs relating to the culture and daily life of the Omaha Indians. Included are images depicting an earth lodge in an Omaha Village, ca. 1860; sacred circle and lodge poles, ca. 1908; and a dance at the Blackbird Hill Presbyterian Mission in Macy, Nebraska.
The sound recording portion of the collection consists of approximately forty audio cassettes and audio discs. Most relate to the Omaha Indian language. The audio cassette recordings were made in 1976 and 1977. Not all audio-visual materials are readily accessible. Researchers interested in the audio portion of the collection should consult with a reference staff member.
