BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Orville A. Ralston was born in September of 1894 near Weeping Water, Nebraska. He graduated from Peru State Teachers College in 1915 and from the University of Nebraska Dental College in 1920. He entered training at the outbreak of World War I and served in both British and American forces. An aviator, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in October of 1918 for his “combat success and daring” in leading a fight over the western front. He was officially credited with the destruction of six German planes and was given unofficial credit for six more. He was recognized as an expert on ballistics and gunnery.

From 1920 to 1936 Ralston practiced dentistry in Ainsworth, Nebraska, except while doing graduate work in the San Francisco College of Physicians and Surgeons. While at Ainsworth he served two terms on the city council, one as mayor. In 1937 he moved to Valentine, Nebraska. The following year he was appointed to the state aeronautical commission. After World War II began he enlisted and was commissioned a Major in the Air Corps in 1942, serving as a personnel officer. Major Ralston was killed in an airplane crash near Great Falls, Montana, December 30, 1942. He was survived by his wife, Charlotte, and three children, Janet, Robert, and Patricia.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
